TOACA
Cultural Foundation is a non-governmental, non-profit organization
established in 1996 by
Nona Ciobanu, theatre directress, and Iulian Baltatescu, actor
and set designer. Its intentions are to provide an outside-the-system
framework for contemporary arts, to offer young artists cross-disciplinary
training and support for independent projects, to promote communication
between Romanian freelance artists and between national and international
cultural values, to create a space where art, politics and social
issues can interact, to broaden the scope of cultural projects
into the community.
Partners/network-
the traditional partners of TOACA Cultural Foundation are: Moving
Academy for
Performing Arts (MAPA) Amsterdam, Contemporary Dance Association
Bratislava and Mamapapa Praga; TOACA is also member of three international
networks: IETM (Informal European Theatre Meeting), EMF (European
Mime Federation) and TEH (Trans Europe Halles), having connections
with the international artistic community and especially with European
cultural centres. TOACA participates at various international seminars
and festivals.
Nona
Ciobanu, theatre directress, debuted at Edinburgh Theatre Festival
with Youth Without Old Age and Life Without Death. She received
numerous awards (debut, best show, best director) for performances
directed in Romania, Germany and Malta. Starting from 1996 she worked
in state theaters (in Bucharest: Mic Theatre, Bulandra Theatre,
in Piatra Neamt: Youth Theatre, directing performances like: Love
for Three Oranges by Carlo Gozzi, Melissa by Nikos Kazantzakis,
The Playboy of The Western World by J.M Synge, As you Like It by
William Shakespeare, But, Mother, in The Second Part They Are Only
Recounting What Happened in The First One by Matei Visniec, Dogs'
Waltz by Leonid Andreev, The Future is A Pulp Story by Vlad Zografi),
as well as on
independent stages, directing and producing performances for Toaca
Cultural Foundation, shows that toured many European countries.
Iulian Bãltãtescu trained as an actor, set
and light designer. He worked closely with Nona Ciobanu for all
her productions. In Toaca he is also responsible for the design
and production of the prints, and the "on-line" and "off-line"
products. He took various workshops in cultural management, light
and set design and he followed the DasArts program in Amsterdam
(1999 2001).
Since 1998 he performs as a teacher and consultant for Moving Academy
for Performing Arts Amsterdam.
Mihnea Mircan trained as an art historian and cultural manager.
His collaboration with the Toaca Cultural Foundation was an professionally
enriching one, ranging from establishing the cultural policy of
the organisation to representing it in international forums, generally
acting as a porte-bonheur.
